Susan MacWilliam

Out of this World

Susan MacWilliam lives and works in Belfast and Dublin, Ireland. She is a Lecturer in Fine Art at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. In 2009 MacWilliam represented Northern Ireland with a solo show at the Venice Biennale. Working with video, photography and installation MacWilliam's work explores cases of paranormal and perceptual phenomena. MacWilliam has worked with prominent parapsychologists, psychical research institutions and archives, including poltergeist investigator Dr William G Roll, the Dermo Optical Laboratory of Madame Yvonne Duplessis, Paris, the Parapsychology Foundation, New York, the Hamilton Family Fonds (Spirit Photograph Collection) University of Manitoba and the Rhine Research Center and Parapsychology Laboratory Archives, Duke University, Durham, NC.

Solo exhibitions include Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin; Conner Contemporary, Washington, DC; Jack the Pelican Presents, New York;Cornerhouse, Manchester; Gimpel Fils, London; Context Gallery, Derry; aceartinc, Winnipeg; Project Arts Centre, Dublin; Likovni Salon, Celje. Group exhibitions include Presentation House Gallery, Vancouver; Photographers' Gallery, London; David Roberts Foundation, London; IMMA, Dublin and Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston. MacWilliam has exhibited in the Internationale Foto-Trienniale, Esslingen and Helsinki Photography Festival. Recent exhibitions in 2011/12 include The Edge of Reason, Kino Kino, Sandnes; Afterlife, Tot Zover, Funeral Museum, Amsterdam; Wunder, Deichtorhallen, Hamburg and Kunsthalle Krems; Cutting A Door, Eastlink Gallery, Shanghai; and We Make Versions, Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster.
